Fun Holiday Reading for Middle and High Schoolers

With more time on their hands during the holidays to read for pleasure, Study Wizards reading tutors in San Jose, CA encourage you to share these classic stories with your middle or high schooler.

In fact, the pleasure could be a shared one with your family reading them out loud together. Engage your child’s imagination during the holidays with these stories and letters that have stood the test of time:

Letters from Father Christmas by J.R.R. Tolkien

Letters From Father Christmas is a collection of endearing Christmas letters penned by the author of The Lord of the Rings trilogy to his children over a span of 20 years. J.R.R. Tolkien wrote each letter from the perspective of Santa or his elvish helper, Ilbereth, describing their Christmas-themed adventures and lightly touching on current events in England at the time (World War II).

The Greatest Gift by Philip Van Doren Stern

Written in 1943, this Christmas short story became the basis for the beloved holiday movie It’s a Wonderful Life. Centering around George Pratt (rather than George Bailey), the plot is similar to the film—disappointed with life, George meets his guardian angel, who shows him what it would be like if he had never been born. In the end, he realizes he’s been given “the greatest gift”—the gift of life and a loving family.

Revolt of the Evil Fairies by Ted Poston

This interesting short story about the biggest social event of the year takes place at Booker T. Washington Colored Grammar School. The story is cute, funny and engaging as it touches on both the classic issues of childhood love, rivalry and a more complex concern of internalized racism.
